A-Rod: The Most Hated Man in All of Professional Sports

arod

I remember watching a segment many years back on ESPN about how hard Alex Rodriguez trains. It was one of those really perfect ESPN montages, that makes you look up to the man, the athlete–even if you hated him passionately. The focus of the piece was that A-Rod is the best player in baseball because he works harder than anybody else. Just like Michael Jordan, he lives to train, and that’s what made him the best. Looking back on it with regard to recent evidence, that segment by ESPN is a total load of shit.

A-Rod is now one of the most detestable players in baseball. He’s arrogant, phony, and proven as of recently, a cheater. He’s cheated on his wife and cheated on the game of baseball by using performance enhancing drugs. If you saw his recent press conference, you’d also know that he blames his steroid use on some anonymous cousin. What’s up with that? Oh yeah, don’t forget that he’s a liar. This interview with Katie Couric is an example of what somebody looks like when they’re lying:

That video is what John Stewart would probably refer to as “your moment of Zen.” As a Red Sox fan, I’m really basking in the sun on this news. I think it’s horrible for the game of baseball, but I love to see the Yankees suffer in any shape, way, or form.

Here’s a bit more of the story from USA Today:

TAMPA — An emotional and nervous Alex Rodriguez revealed details Tuesday about his performance-enhancing drug use, explaining how his cousin injected him with a substance from the Dominican Republic an estimated 36 times from 2001 to 2003.

The New York Yankees third baseman declined to name his cousin but said he told him “boli,” purchased over the counter in the Dominican Republic, would increase his energy level as he took it an average of twice a month in six-month cycles.

Rodriguez later admitted he was aware the substance wasn’t “Tic Tacs.” Gary Wadler, an anti-doping expert and New York internist, said “boli” refers to anabolic steroids Deca-Durabolin, Dianabol or Primobolan.

“I didn’t think they were steroids,” Rodriguez said. “That’s again part of being young and stupid. It was over the counter. It was pretty simple.”

A day before his first spring training workout with the Yankees, Rodriguez, 33, met with about 200 reporters in a blue-covered tent outside George M. Steinbrenner Field behind the third-base line.

Rodriguez, a three-time American League MVP and baseball’s highest-paid player, became the latest star to fall after Sports Illustrated reported on its website Feb. 7 that he had tested positive for steroids during Major League Baseball’s anonymous survey testing in 2003. The results were supposed to be destroyed, but federal agents seized them in 2004 as part of the BALCO investigation.

Two days after the SI story was released, Rodriguez admitted in an ESPN interview he used a banned substance. But he didn’t answer what he took, how often he used, where he got it or how it was administered.

Rodriguez said Tuesday, “I’m here to take my medicine.”

I’ll admit that Barry Bonds can compete with A-Rod as the most hated professional athlete; he’s a confirmed asshole and a confirmed cheater. The worst about Barry is that he stole the most sacred of baseball records and tainted the game forever.

Kobe doesn’t even come close. In fact, I love Kobe. He’s one of the most exciting players in the game. I’m in China right now and all the Chinese are obsessed with Kobe. He’s the man.

Tonya who? Nobody cares about figure skating. That’s history. Just an anecdote.
