When thinking about what to post on a blog, it’s easy to think of yourself as a curator. Often, you’re sharing content that’s already out there. I’d like to create as much original content as possible, but sometimes something is so striking you feel an obligation to share it, and almost always somebody else can communicate something better than I can. I came across this video by Percolate and I liked their curation of answers to the question “What is Curation?”

“This is a bad time to do a half-measure on infrastructure. We have literally trillions of dollars in unmet infrastructure needs. We have massive unemployment in the construction sector. Materials are unusually cheap because of a depressed global economy. Borrowing is unusually cheap because we’re one of the few safe havens left in the global financial market. And it’s cheaper to repaid an aging bridge today than rebuild a crumbled one 10 years from now. So waiting to do the bulk of our infrastructure passing a half-measure on infrastructure investment later is like waiting till after the big sale ends to buy your groceries. It’s just bad financial planning.”

Rumor has it the House will fail to pass the Boxer-Inhofe transportation bill for improving infrastructure and transportation… again. As Ezra Klein from the Washington Post points out above, that would be a huge mistake given the current economic climate. DOH!

I believe that writing is a powerful tool for developing our brains, and even more than that, our passions, opinions and who we are. I can personally attest to the fact that 5 years ago, when I was a junior in college, writing helped me form longer lasting memories that seem more vivid today than memories from other periods of my life when I wasn’t writing about my experiences. Creating memory endurance alone is worth the effort, and suddenly I feel quite foolish for not writing over the past 3 years.

Writing for yourself is one thing, but publishing for others is another. Now you’re reading my words and I’m influencing your thoughts, almost certainly unsubstantially, but you cannot deny that in some unmeasurable way the influence is there. Maybe this will create a memory. Maybe this will influence you to do something. Maybe this will serve as a catalyst. Or maybe this will steal time from you when you could have been writing instead.

It’s fascinating to think back to a time when writing didn’t exist at all. It wasn’t until the 4th century BC that writing was invented to keep up with the complexities of trade. It’s difficult to imagine that before writing, everything was memorized, and writing was once upon a time considered a new technology. Just as technophobia exists today, many were opposed to writing and assumed that it would rot the brain and weaken the memory.
